Finish filing your taxes and come on out to pi-New Haven to celebrate spring with the poetry of Dimitris Lyacos who will be reading from his new book Z213:Exit. Born and raised in Athens, Dimistris is currently based in Berlin and he’s travelling across the Atlantic to share his poetry with us. His presence at pi-New Haven continues our theme of poetry that crosses artistic genres. His trilogy Poena Damni (Z213: EXIT, Nyctivoe, The First Death), written over the course of eighteen years, has been translated into English, Spanish, Italian and German and has been the subject of readings in several European countries as well as the United States. An audio-visual installation based on Nyctivoe made its debut in London and was thereafter hosted by a variety of prestigious European venues throughout 2005, while a contemporary dance performance based on the same work was staged in Greece in 2006-2007.(from www.Lyacos.net)

March 26th in Hamden
Posted by poetryinstitute on March 28, 2010
Thanks to all of our Poetry Institute regulars who joined us over to the open mic in Hamden. As many of you may have seen in our recent email on the topic, The Sleeping Giant Poets Guild and the Hamden Arts Commission sponsored An Evening of Poetry with Richard Tillinghast. Poets were there from all over including the Guilford Poets Guild, Curly’s Diner, Wednesday Night Poetry Series. I hope everyone had a chance to meet Tony Fusco, President of The Connecticut Poetry Society and the feature poet, Richard Tillinghast. A personal thanks from me to Mark for manning the tables, and to Herschel for helping me lug the staging from my truck into the auditorium to set up the evening. It was a great night and hopefully more outings where we visit other venues are in our future! Cheers, Eli

March open mic
Posted by poetryinstitute on March 19, 2010
Wow! What a wonderful evening. The weather was beautiful all day. The sky a lovely shade of blue, daffodil’s stretching their stalks, robins busy catching the worms rustling beneath the leaves. And to top it all off, some of us gathered at pi-New Haven to enjoy an evening of poetry with Gardner McFall.
Gardner is no stranger to the area. But last night, she made her way from New York to New Haven by train. I think everyone in attendance found something personnally special in her work and the discussions over cheese and crackers. Gardner shared some poems from her new book Russian Tortoise, and poems from her earlier book, The Pilot’s Daughter. Her work is best described as “poignant” , “deeply curious” and ”speculative”. She investigates and responds to the natural world around her with both a sense of history and immediacy.
Ah spring! I highly recommend her work and if you missed it, put her name on your list of poets not to miss next time you get the chance!
Thank you Gardner for joining us. Best of luck with Amelia. We can’t wait for the east coast opening and we hope you’ll come visit pi-New Haven when you’re in the area.
