When: February 17th, 2011

Doors Open at 6:30.  Reading starts at 7:00.

Where: The Institute Library,   847 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT

Join us for a reading by Charles Hartman, Poet in Residence at Conn College. He is co-founder with Wendy Battin of the Contemporary American Poetry Archive (CAPA), where out-of-print volumes of poetry are preserved on-line and can be accessed free of charge by anyone with internet access.

Of his work, Jazz musician Steve Swallow writes,    “Charles O. Hartman is a musician’s poet. Those of us who spend our time looking for melodies, and for ways to hang them together, recognize that same impulse in his work; his poems sound like the best Tin Pan Alley songs, graceful and concise. His cadences are as unforced as Lester Young’s, and his language as refined. These verses sing.”

Posted by poetryinstitute on January 23, 2011

What a great night this past week at pi-New Haven!

The sky held off shoveling snow on top of us just long enough for thirty of us to come out and enjoy the season kickoff.

Thank you to everyone participating in the open mic! Thursday brought out some of pi’s regular participants; It was good to see everyone again, especially the faces we hadn’t seen in a while.  Thanks to the folks who sent word they couldn’t make it but were thinking of us. We hope you are somewhere warm! We even met a few new folks too and hope you will come back and share your poetry again.

Our sincere thanks to Randall who entertained us with a wonderful reading and his encouragement of everyone’s work. We hope you will come back and visit us and bring some of your students!

As promised here are some of the links related to Thursday’s participant announcements:

Monica Ong announced her work is part of an upcoming AC Institute show in New York called See You On The Flip Side, opening February, 3rd. As many of you may recall last year Monica shared her work in progress with us at pi-New Haven: Remedies.  This collection of Antique medicine bottles, inkjet print on paper, epoxy, lacquer finish with original writing is for a brave new market of social angst caused by cultural conditioning. Congratulations Monica!

The Connecticut Poetry Society Announces a CPS New Haven County Chapter! Yeah! Christine Beck is organizing this new New Haven County CPS Chapter.  The first meeting is scheduled for February 26th, 2011 from 10-12 noon. Meeting in the Library’s Friends of the Library Meeting Room the address is: Hamden Library, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden, CT
